A Look Back At The Career of Former Titan Derrick Mason
It seems like just yesterday when Derrick Mason was catching passes from Steve McNair and making big plays at LP Field.
Mason, a fourth-round draft pick by the Tennessee Oilers in 1997, played his first eight NFL seasons in Tennessee, becoming the franchise’s fifth-leading all-time receiver with 453 receptions for 6,114 yards (13.5 avg) and 37 touchdowns.
He was part of a core group of legendary Titans players, including the likes of McNair, Eddie George, Frank Wycheck, Bruce Matthews, Jevon Kearse, Blaine Bishop and Kevin Dyson that led Tennessee to a Super Bowl appearance and the NFL’s best combined record from 1999-2003.
Legendary Titans Coach Jeff Fisher Saves The Day
On Sunday night, the new coach of the St. Louis Rams was much more than that.
Fisher was the first to arrive at the scene of a Brentwood, Tenn., car crash in which a Nissan Altima skirted off the road and overturned after hitting a pole, according to WKRN-TV.
Titans Name New Secondary Coach Brett Maxie
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Tennessee Titans named Brett Maxie secondary coach.
Maxie joins the Titans after spending four seasons with the Dallas Cowboys in the same role. He has 14 seasons of NFL coaching experience, including stops at Miami, Atlanta, San Francisco and Carolina.
“What stood out to me was his diverse experience as a player and a coach,” said Titans head coach Mike Munchak. “He has worked with some really good coordinators from a variety of backgrounds. He is a detailed guy who has had a lot of success as a coach and a player. We were aware that his contract had expired, and I talked to a number of people around the league about him and heard nothing but positive things, which is a rarity in this league.”
In his time with the Cowboys, he worked for two different coordinators – Wade Phillips for the first three years and Rob Ryan last year. In 2008, his secondary helped the Cowboys rank fifth in the NFL in passing defense. In Maxie’s four years in Dallas, CB Terence Newman totaled 16 interceptions, which ranks as the ninth best total in the NFL over that time period. In his one season working in Dom Capers’ defense at the Dolphins in 2007, Miami fielded the fourth-best passing defense in the NFL. In four years at Atlanta (2004-06), Maxie helped develop CB DeAngelo Hall into a Pro Bowl cornerback. He spent five seasons with the 49ers (1999-2003), including three seasons as the assistant secondary coach and the final two years as secondary coach. During a three-year period (2001-03) with the 49ers, Maxie’s secondary totaled 66 interceptions – the third highest number in the NFL. His first NFL coaching job came at Carolina in 1998 as a quality control coach.
“I am really excited about this opportunity and the chance to work with Mike Munchak and Jerry Gray,” said Maxie. “I have played and coached against each of these men and I have great respect for what they are all about and what they have accomplished. Mike has an impeccable reputation as a coach and I like what I heard about how he runs his team. Jerry and I came into the league as players at the same time (1985) and our teams battled each other in the old NFC West and I have admired his work as a coach through the years.”
Maxie entered the NFL as an undrafted safety from Texas Southern. He originally signed with the New Orleans Saints and would go on to have a 13-year NFL career. During his career, he played in 153 games, including 104 starts, and recorded 23 interceptions and three touchdowns. Maxie played nine seasons (1985-93) with the Saints, one season in Atlanta (1994), two years in Carolina (1995-96) and finished his career with one year in San Francisco (1997).
Maxie replaces Marcus Robertson, who was let go earlier this month.
Tight End Craig Stevens Signs To Multi-Year Contract With The Titans
Just days after I posted an article about what to look for this offseason comes the first big transaction for the Titans was the resigning of starting Tight End Craig Stevens. In my previous article I predicted that Stevens ability to block in both the passing and running game as well as his ability to get down field and make plays would bring the opportunity for the Titans coaching staff to offer him a new contract. Let The Offseason Begin
The Titans 9-7 winning season was a far cry from the predicted 4 wins and last overall ranking in the AFC South that the “experts” predicted during the preseason. With arguably the team heading into the 2011 season with the most hurdles to overcome, after having fired sixteen year Titans veteran Head Coach Jeff Fisher, Offensive Coordinator Mike Heimerdinger (Rest In Peace Dinger, Much Love), Defensive Coordinator Chuck Cecil, Starting Quarterback Vince Young, backup Quarterback (once starter) Kerry Collins, and the loss of Defensive Line Coach Jim Washburn to the Iggles. In addition having to deal with the NFL lockout (I know it affected everyone) the Titans had to acquire a new Quarterback in Matt Hasselbeck, a Middle Linebacker Barrett Rudd (replaced by Colin McCarthy), a new Offensive Coordinator (Chris Palmer), a new Defensive Coordinator (Jerry Gray), a new Head Coach (Mike Munchak), a new Offensive Line Coach since Munch became Head Coach (Bruce Matthews), and last but not least a new Defensive Line Coach (Tracy Rocker). The Titans entire overhaul of the Coaching staff is by far one of the largest in NFL history, not to mention their 9-7 record and near playoff berth (first since 2008) is a true indication that the change was for the better, in my opinion, had it not been for the lockout we would be in the tournament as I write this.
